The Dynamics of the Divorcing Couple  – with Larry Stone, LMFT

When working with a client going through a divorce, we often see severe reactions and intense stress.  There is also a tendency for the individual client to paint a very black and white, highly negative picture of their spouse. This presentation will help to create an understanding of how this situation develops, as well as ways to respond to it that will help rather than exacerbate the problems.

• Learning Objectives:
  

• Attendees will develop an understanding of the history and intensity of the conflict often present during the period around the divorce.
  
• Attendees will gain an understanding of the cycle between the spouses.
  
• Attendees will learn how misguided attempts at support are often destructive.
  
• Attendees will learn to differentiate toxic support from helpful support.

Larry Stone is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been in private practice since 2003.  In addition to doing depth work with individuals and working with couples from an Emotionally Focused Therapy perspective, he is also a trained and experienced mediator specializing primarily in divorce and custody issues, and a Child Custody Evaluator working with the Courts in several California counties.  He wrote the book "Divorcing Peacefully: Why It's Essential and How To Do It", and is a strong advocate for helping divorced couples learn to work together as co-parents for the sake of their children. He currently has offices in Soquel, Campbell and Fremont.
