Nonviolent Communication in Therapy
with Rick Longinotti
1.5 CE Credits
Nonviolent Communication is not just about communicating. Through empathetic guessing we can be a catalyst for the client to change his/her thinking—beliefs that have been shaped by a culture that reinforces guilt, shame, and despair. Nonviolent Communication helps us move towards a relationship with ourselves and others that is free of guilt and defensiveness.
Learning Objectives:
In this presentation we will use role plays and exercises to explore:
- How can we help our clients transform the kind of thinking that leads to self-sabotage and destructive relationships?
- Can we practice the kind of empathy that doesn’t reinforce judgmental or negative thinking?
- What do we need to change about our own beliefs in order to help our clients transform their thinking?

Part 1: Client Self-empowerment
Participants will practice empathy as guessing at feelings and needs with the goal that this approach to empathy can be incorporated in their work.
Part 2: Non-Defensive Relationships
Sharing the self-empathy process with clients so that clients may follow up with the self-empathy worksheet.
Noticing typical forms of self-critical thinking and alternatives to those ways of thinking.
Part 3: Healing Hurts Through Role Play
The goal of this session is for participants to appreciate the power of role plays to heal hurtful experiences and gain experience in playing roles to catalyze client self-acceptance and empathy for others.
