Description

Research on the physiology of mental illness has been exploding in recent years. Not only has there been more research, many of the findings are yielding useful applications in clinical practice. Since traumatic incidents or developmental trauma are contributing factors in most mental illnesses, giving clinicians effective tools for helping clients is key to enhancing the effectiveness of their work with clients. As therapists, we know that the vast majority of our clients have experienced either developmental trauma leading to unhelpful attachment styles or traumatic incidents leading to unhelpful reactivity. This workshop will summarize some of the latest scientific understandings of how developmental trauma and traumatic incidents impact our brains and bodies. It will also cover a wide variety of tools encompassing many disciplines, including CBT, somatic and mindfulness. Clinicians will leave with ideas for selecting interventions that will be appropriate and helpful for individual clients.

Learning Objectives

In successfully completing and attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
  1. List five physiological impacts of trauma.
  2. Describe three interventions for healing developmental trauma.
  3. Share why clients should control the pacing of therapeutic trauma work.
